State Group Leader Hoffmann of CSU launches an offensive against Pro Asyl - Leader of CSU's faction, Hoffmann, Assails Pro Asylum Organization

Alexander Hoffmann, the fresh face leading the CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has stirred up a hornet's nest with his accusations against refugee aid organizations like Pro Asyl. The fuss surrounds the case of the returns at the German-Polish border, deemed illegal by the Berlin Administrative Court. Hoffmann, in an interview with the "Augsburg General" (Saturday), suggested potential pre-entry support for Somalis by German helpers, to which Pro Asyl strongly objected.

"The Shadows of a Contrived Spectacle"

Hoffmann suggested that the case of the three Somali asylum seekers showcased "almost absurd stages" and hinted at a "contrived spectacle." The CSU leader pointed out that Pro Asyl has long been active on refugee routes, including at border crossings. Here, refugees are advised to discard their IDs, making deportation from Germany much more difficult, according to Hoffmann.

Hoffmann's Specific Claims

In the case of the three Somali asylum seekers, Hoffmann said one individual switched from being of legal age during the first two attempts and suddenly became a minor in the third, with ID documents exhibiting signs of forgery. All three had brand new mobile phones, making it challenging to track their travel route. "This sequence of events reveals the clear stages of a contrived spectacle by asylum activists," Hoffmann asserted.

Pro Asyl responds with "Unfounded Smears"

Karl Kopp, the managing director of Pro Asyl, countered Hoffmann's accusations in the newspaper, stating they were baseless. "We are a human rights organization and provide legal support to refugees," Kopp emphasized. "This was also the case with the three individuals from Somalia, one of whom remains a minor." Advising refugees to ditch their IDs or purchase new mobile phones is nothing more than unfounded smears, Kopp asserted, underscoring that such statements attack their work.

The Berlin Administrative Court, in an urgent decision on Monday, deemed the return of the three Somalis at a border control in Frankfurt (Oder) illegal due to a lack of clarification of which EU country is responsible for the asylum applications. Without such clarification, the applicants may not be rejected. As a result, the three affected were sent back to Poland. Meanwhile, the three asylum seekers are now back in Berlin, as a spokesperson for the Senate Administration for the Interior confirmed.
