Governor Kathy Hochul Gains Wide Support in New Siena College Poll

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is enjoying a surge in popularity, according to a recent Siena College poll. The poll shows a majority of registered voters in New York prefer Hochul over Republican Representative Elise Stefanik as the state's executive.

Hochul leads Stefanik by a significant 25 percentage points, a 11-point increase from last month. This advantage is evident in New York City, the suburbs, and upstate, where Hochul has a plurality of votes. Interestingly, Hochul now leads with unaffiliated voters, while independents slightly favoured Stefanik last month.

The poll's margin of error is 4.2%, providing a fair indication of the public's sentiment.

Hochul's job approval rating is at its highest in over two years, and her favourability has increased as well. The governor's rating is positive for the first time since April and is her best rating since January 2024. Near-majorities in the poll said they believe Hochul demonstrates honesty and integrity, works hard for the people of New York, and provides decisive leadership.

The poll also shows that a majority of New York voters believe Trump's spending bill will threaten necessary health care programs. A majority (57%) also believe Trump should not send the National Guard into New York, a position strongly opposed by Governor Hochul. Trump's job approval is at its worst since the beginning of his second term, and his favourability is at a two-year low in the new poll.

The decision to endorse Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee in the race for New York City mayor, could potentially boost Hochul's support in the city. Hochul had declined to endorse Mamdani for months following his primary victory. The Democratic candidate for New York City mayor officially endorsed by Hochul in September 2022 was Eric Adams.

The Siena College poll, conducted between Sept. 8 and 10, offers a snapshot of the current political climate in New York. With Hochul's strong lead and favourable ratings, it seems she is well-positioned for the upcoming elections.
