Lead after the initial round of the Boeing Classic is shared by Jerry Kelly and Matt Gogel
In the picturesque setting of the Boeing Classic, Jerry Kelly made a remarkable comeback on day one, tying for the lead after a stunning run of six consecutive birdies.
Kelly, who won the tournament in 2017, found himself in a familiar position as he shared the first-round lead. The run of birdies began on the 12th hole and continued through the 17th, where he made the clincher on the par-3. It wasn't until he saw it on the scoreboard after the sixth birdie that he realised the magnitude of his achievement.
However, the joy was short-lived as Kelly made a bogey on the final hole, leaving him with a mixed feeling of satisfaction and frustration. "I'm pretty angry about the bogey on the last hole," Kelly admitted. "But I'm happy with the way I played overall."
Meanwhile, Matt Gogel also had a strong round, tying for the lead with Kelly after making eight birdies in his last twelve holes. Gogel, who has been working on improving his fairway and greens hits, seemed to have found a winning formula. He switched irons at his last event, and the change has boosted his confidence.
Another player to watch is Paul Goydos, who is currently in third place, alone. Goydos, who is yet to win a tournament since 2017, is hoping to change that at the Boeing Classic.
Seattle native Fred Couples had a more challenging day, managing only two birdies in a round of 1-over 73. This leaves him tied for 53rd. Local favourite Jeff Gove, also a Seattle native, is tied for 62nd with a score of 74.
Kirk Triplett, a Pullman High School graduate, had a better day, finishing with a score of 69, which places him tied for 21st. Miguel Angel Jimenez is also tied for 21st with Triplett.
Five players are tied for fourth place: Darren Clarke, David Duval, Vijay Singh, Brandt Jobe, and Freddie Jacobson.
While the current leaderboard for the 2022 Boeing Classic is not available, it's clear that the tournament is shaping up to be a thrilling one. With Kelly defending his 2017 win and Gogel finding his form, the competition is fierce. The second round promises to be as exciting as the first, with players vying for the top spot.
In the city of Seattle, where the Seattle Mariners and the Seahawks are beloved, an exciting sports conversation might revolve around the ongoing Boeing Classic. Jerry Kelly, a previous winner in 2017, is creating a buzz once more, tying for the lead on day one with an impressive run of six consecutive birdies. Meanwhile, another local to watch, Paul Goydos, is hoping to end his tournament drought since 2017, currently in third place alone. As the competition thickens, golf enthusiasts in Seattle might well have their own opinion on who will clinch the grand prize in this thrilling tournament.
