LDP Leadership Race: Jiji Poll Shows Koizumi Leading Over Takaichi

Japan's Upcoming LDP Presidential Election: A Preliminary Overview

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is gearing up for its presidential election, scheduled for October 4. The contestants are those who ran in the previous LDP presidential election held in September 2024, excluding Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. One of the declared candidates is Sanae Takaichi, who previously lost to Ishiba in a runoff. If elected, Takaichi would become Japan's first female Prime Minister.

According to a recent opinion poll conducted by Jiji Press from Friday through Monday, Takaichi is currently favored by 21.0% of respondents. She is closely followed by Shinjiro Koizumi, the current agriculture minister, who enjoys the support of 23.8% of respondents.

The survey, which was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 2,000 people aged 18 and over nationwide, also revealed some intriguing insights about other potential candidates. Takayuki Kobayashi, a former economic security minister, accounts for 3.1% of support, while Yoshimasa Hayashi, the current chief cabinet secretary, and Toshimitsu Motegi, a former party secretary-general, are tied for third place with 5.9% support each.

Interestingly, former economic security minister Sanae Takaichi and former Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, despite not indicating their intention to stand, account for 1.4% and 2.8% of potential support respectively. Similarly, former Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato, who have not declared their candidacy, account for 2.8% and 0.9% of potential support respectively.

The poll results indicate a competitive race, with no clear front-runner as yet. The election will be a significant event in Japan's political landscape, and the outcome will undoubtedly shape the country's future direction. As the campaign heats up, it will be interesting to see how the candidates position themselves and how the support base evolves.

Stay tuned for more updates on the LDP presidential election.
