LDP Leadership Contest Favorite: Koizumi, with Takaichi in Second Position, According to Jiji Poll

The upcoming presidential election for Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is scheduled for October 4. A recent Jiji Press opinion poll has shed light on the current favourites for the top position.

The poll, conducted through face-to-face interviews on 2,000 people nationwide from Friday through Monday, asked respondents to pick one candidate from the previous LDP presidential election held in September 2024, excluding Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The results show that Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is the second-favourite candidate, with 22.5% of the votes. Koizumi has officially announced his candidacy for the LDP leadership, although it appears from the search results that this is his first time running for the LDP presidency.

Currently, Koizumi is the favoured candidate, with a significant lead over the other contenders. Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato received 0.9% support, Takayuki Kobayashi, a former economic security minister, has 3.1%, Former Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa received 1.4%, and Yoshimasa Hayashi, the current chief cabinet secretary, and Toshimitsu Motegi, a former party secretary-general, both have 5.9% support. Sanae Takaichi, another former economic security minister, is favoured by 21.0% of respondents.

Former Foreign Minister Taro Kono received 2.8% support in the Jiji Press poll, but no information was provided about the respondents or the methodology of the poll. It is worth noting that the poll results do not include the current Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, who was not an option in the poll.

The poll results indicate a tight race for the LDP presidency, with several contenders vying for the top position. The election is expected to be a significant event in Japanese politics, and the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the country's future.

As the campaign season heats up, voters will be closely watching the developments and making their decisions based on the candidates' policies and platforms. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining who will lead the LDP and, by extension, the country.
