Gather 'round, folks! We got ourselves a juicy Lima scandal brewing, and it's time to dish everything out. Our beloved mayor, Rafael López Aliaga, recently hit up a party thrown by lawyer Wilber Medina, attended by none other than infamous former bagman, Alberto Venero. Now, if you ain't up to speed, Alberto was a known associate of ex-presidential advisor Vladimiro Montesinos, a man famous for his role in some pretty gnarly corruption cases during the regime of Alberto Fujimori.
This bash, which took place in La Molina district on February 2, 2023, welcomed approximately 200 guests. Now, let's talk about Wilber Medina – he's the attorney for the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML) in their judicial conflict against Brookfield, the company that owns Rutas de Lima. When asked about the gathering and Alberto's presence, Medina cooly replied:
"I ain't backing down from anything. I don't deny my pals. And if you ask me about Alberto Venero, he's been my buddy for eons. I got lunch at his place, he drops by mine when we got somethin' cookin'. I've also been his lawyer."
Yikes! Remember, Alberto has a history of involvement in some major corruption cases under Alberto Fujimori and Montesinos' regime, so this isn't a great look for our mayor. By the way, Alberto was extradited from the United States in 2001 and spent quite a bit of time in the clink. In 2019, he managed to walk away after striking a deal with the authorities and owing the State S/19.5 million as civil reparations.
Apart from these two shady characters, the party reportedly saw the faces of Phil Butters, Elizabeth Palomino Córdova, and Patricia Venero Nazar. Elizabeth was once married to businessman Vicente Díaz Arce, who was accused of money laundering. Some photos from the event even surfaced in the media.
Upon being questioned, Medina claimed that López Aliaga and Alberto haven't crossed paths. "They don't know each other. They're aware of me. Rafael López Aliaga don't even know Alberto," he said. When asked if he introduced them, he fired back: "You think I'd go around introducin' everyone? (...) I got my own peeps, and they deal with their own law troubles."
So, there you have it, folks. Our gleeful Lima mayor mingling with some questionable characters at the infamous Wilber Medina party. As always, stay tuned for more juicy Lima drama unfolding!
Behind the Scenes:
Speaking of behind-the-scenes, it's worth mentioning that Wilber Medina, the lavish party host, doesn't just have a personal connection to the mayor – he actually works for the MML as their lawyer. Moreover, he's been working for various municipal entities, including the Municipal Administration of Peajes and the Patronato del Parque de Las Leyendas, without going through a proper public tender process.
Rafael López Aliaga and his team also hired the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner to take legal action in the US against Brookfield, the company that owns Rutas de Lima. The total cost for these legal services came out to S/97.5 million. Now, that's some serious coin! But, unfortunately for our mayor, a New York court recently dismissed a request for the company's documentation.
Meanwhile, Medina has also been attempting to invalidate the contract between Brookfield and the MML, but without any notable success. Hey, you gotta try if you wanna win, right?
