Smokey Robinson's Attorney Plans to Dismiss $50M Lawsuit

Smokey Robinson, the Motown icon, is in hot water with four former employees who have filed a mammoth $50 million lawsuit, accusing the singer of sexual misconduct, labor law violations, and more. Robinson's legal team is swiftly planning to dismiss the case, calling it an "unscrupulous attempt" to extort money from the 84-year-old legend.

Christopher Frost, Robinson's attorney and a founding partner of Frost LLP, slammed the allegations as "vile," "false," and Exhibit A for "extortion tactics." Frost's statement further pointed out numerous aspects of the lawsuit that defy credulity. The legal response, according to Frost, will delve into issues related to timelines, inconsistencies, and interplays between the plaintiffs and others.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleges that Robinson and his wife, Frances, engaged in various forms of sexual misconduct, including sexual battery, assault, and digital penetration. Furthermore, the Robinsons are accused of fostering a hostile work environment, characterized by ethnic slurs, emotional distress, gender violence, and failing to pay minimum wage, overtime, and providing proper meal breaks.

Smokey Robinson declined to comment on the allegations, telling the Daily Mail that he cannot speak on the issue at this time.

The women—plaintiffs Jane Doe 1 through 4—allege that Robinson summoned them to his homes in Chatsworth, Bell Canyon, and Las Vegas when his wife wasn't present. They claim he forced them into unwanted sexual encounters, including vaginal, oral, and digital acts, spanning several years. Frances Robinson allegedly knew about her husband's behavior and failed to intervene.

Plaintiffs have also expressed fears of losing their livelihoods, facing public humiliation, and immigration issues if they report the alleged activities.

Additionally, the plaintiffs argue they worked excessively long hours—as many as 10 hours a day, six days per week—without being paid minimum wage, overtime, or holiday pay. Records indicate that California's minimum wage has gradually increased from $6.75 per hour in 2006 to $17.27 per hour in Los Angeles County in July 2024, and $12 per hour in Las Vegas.

The defendants have vowed to fiercely defend their clients against the allegations and are asking the court to dismiss the lawsuit.
