Lawsuit filed by Trump against The New York Times for $15 billion dismissed, branded as 'inappropriate' and 'abusive' by the judge
In a major development, a federal judge has dismissed President Donald Trump's $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times. The ruling, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Steven Merryday, an appointee of President George H.W. Bush, deemed the complaint as 'improper and impermissible.'
The lawsuit, which also named four of the Times' reporters— Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker, and Michael S. Schmidt—as defendants, along with book publisher Penguin Random House, accused the newspaper of trying to ruin Trump's reputation, harm his campaign, and prejudice judges and juries against him.
The complaint was criticized by Judge Merryday as a 'tedious' and 'burdensome aggregation of prospective evidence.' The judge's ruling further stated that a lawsuit is not a public forum for 'vituperation and invective' or 'rage against an adversary.'
Trump's side has been given 28 days to amend the Middle District of Florida complaint, with the new complaint not exceeding 40 pages. However, an attorney for the president could not be immediately reached for comment on Friday afternoon.
This is not the first time Trump has taken legal action against media outlets. Schmidt, Craig, and Baker, who have been contributors to MSNBC and NBC News, have been involved in previous lawsuits with the former president.
Meanwhile, in other news, a 2-year-old who was swept away by California floodwaters has been found dead. Our thoughts go out to the family during this difficult time.
Elsewhere, the ABC affiliate in Sacramento was shot at, but no one was injured in the incident. More details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
