Lawsuit Filed Against Renowned Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan for His Contentious Comments Regarding SC/ST Filmmakers in the Cinematic Industry

In a recent turn of events, renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan finds himself at the centre of a storm in Kerala's film and social communities. His controversial remarks at the Kerala Film Policy Conclave have sparked significant controversy and backlash.

Award-winning filmmaker Adoor, who is a Dadasaheb Phalke laureate, criticized the Kerala State Film Development Corporation's (KSFDC) Rs 1.5 crore grant to SC/ST filmmakers, suggesting it could encourage corruption and should be reduced to Rs 50 lakh. He also proposed at least three months of "intensive training" before grants are awarded to ensure quality control over the use of public funds.

However, his remarks have been met with strong condemnation from various quarters. Adoor has defended his statements, clarifying that his critique was about responsible use of taxpayer money, not against any community. He emphasized that filmmakers should not receive large grants "merely on the basis of their identity" without adequate preparation and training.

The statements have been deemed regressive by many, including cultural activists and Kerala's Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian, who defended the government’s inclusive film policy as a landmark initiative to correct historical exclusions from the film industry. The minister affirmed no plans to roll back the grants.

Dinu Veyil, a Dalit activist, has lodged a complaint with the police and Kerala SC/ST Commission against Adoor, alleging that his remarks collectively demean all SC/ST persons associated with the ongoing scheme. Veyil claims that Adoor's specific phrases cast the SC/ST communities as ignorant and irresponsible, which amounts to deliberate humiliation in public view. He also alleges that Adoor's statements portray members of the SC/ST communities as inherently criminal, dishonest, or prone to corruption, potentially encouraging prejudice and social antipathy.

The complaint, filed with the Museum Police in Thiruvananthapuram and the SC/ST Commission, signals serious legal scrutiny. The controversy remains active with ongoing discussion about the balance between affirmative action and accountability in cultural funding.
