Lawsuit Filed Against Jérémie Assous, Depardieu's Lawyer, by Charlotte Arnould at the Bar Association
In a dramatic turn of events, French actor Gérard Depardieu, 76, has been ordered to stand trial at the Paris criminal court for rape charges. This follows a sentence handed down in 2021, where Depardieu was given an 18-month prison sentence suspended for sexual assaults on two women on the set of Jean Becker's "Green Shutters." Depardieu has since appealed both the rape referral and the sexual assault sentence.
The rape charges against Depardieu have sparked controversy, with allegations of sexist behavior leveled against his lawyer, Jérémie Assous. In a series of events, Assous has been accused of making derogatory remarks against actress Charlotte Arnould during the trial. Arnould has filed a complaint against Assous, claiming a lack of "delicacy, probity, moderation, and dignity."
Arnould's complaint alleges that Assous has also been lying about her in the media, distorting and exposing her private life. This is not the first time Assous has been accused of sexist behavior. In a Le Monde op-ed, lawyers denounced sexism against women lawyers, arguing that Assous had "given free rein to sexism and misogyny." Over 200 lawyers have called for the justice system not to tolerate such behavior, citing numerous attacks by Assous against plaintiffs and their lawyers.
However, the representatives of the order of lawyers consider that Assous followed deontological and legal rules during the trial. Disciplinary procedures for lawyers can range from a warning to disbarment, and the complaint filed with the order of lawyers will be examined to see if it is admissible, and an investigation may be opened, if necessary, before a disciplinary procedure is initiated.
The trial has been condemned by Anne Bouillon, a lawyer, as a "theater of invectives, mockery, and insults." Bouillon argues that plaintiffs were targeted by an aggressive and contemptuous lawyer. In response to the allegations against Assous, Arnould's lawyer has filed a complaint with the order of lawyers for "violations of the principles of moderation, delicacy, probity, loyalty, and sexism."
Assous has announced his intention to appeal the rape referral, adding another layer of complexity to this high-profile case. The trial is set to shed light on the issues of sexism and misconduct in the French legal system, with the outcome potentially setting a precedent for future cases.
