Lawmakers urge for diplomatic discussions between Thailand and Cambodia
The ongoing tussle between Thailand and Cambodia over their disputed border requires both nations to ultimately re-enter negotiations, as retaliatory measures only offer temporary relief, according to the chairperson of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
MP Saratsanun Unnopporn, a Pheu Thai representative from Khon Kaen, made this comment following a meeting with security officials on Wednesday. The committee extended an invitation to representatives from the Defence, Foreign Affairs ministries, and the National Security Council to discuss current conditions related to the dispute.
The primary focus of the meeting surrounded the Joint Border Commission (JBC) and its attempts to address the disagreement.
"Engaging in diplomatic relations with Cambodia is imperative as breaking ties is not an option," Ms. Saratsanun stated. "Invoking the International Court of Justice, as Cambodia demands, isn't a viable solution."
"The government under Paetongtarn Shinawatra must employ every avenue possible to negotiate with a government that disregards international law entirely," she added.
Maj. Gen. Weerayut Raksilp, deputy chief of the Second Army Region, detailed the situation at each border checkpoint. He noted that conflicting reports from Thai and Cambodian authorities have caused confusion amongst the public.
Ms. Saratsanun urged state agencies to prioritize local people, particularly addressing logistical issues at the border affecting traders in agricultural products.
She also suggested that the Thai government's efforts to shut down criminal call center operations based in Cambodia could help foster trust within Thailand and put pressure on Cambodia to negotiate.
A Diplomatic Shift for Resolution
With Thailand employing a combination of military and diplomatic approaches, it's clear that diplomacy is essential for resolving the dispute.
