College Student Gang-Raped: Alleged Sexual Assault at South Calcutta Law College
Law student in Kolkata alleges sexual assault after rejection of marriage proposal: "I refused and retaliated..."
In a chilling turn of events, a 24-year-old law student was subjected to a horrific gang rape at South Calcutta Law College. The accused are reportedly a former student and two senior students, including the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), Monojit Mishra, who had simply refused to take 'no' for an answer when she turned down his marriage proposal.
The troubling incident, as detailed in the complaint filed at Kasba Police Station, transpired on June 25, 2025, around 4 PM. The survivor, a first-year student, had gone to the college for some official work and was allegedly asked by Mishra, 31, to stay back until late evening.
The assault occurred between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM inside the guard room on the ground floor, where Mishra and two other students—19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and 20-year-old Pramit Mukherjee alias Pramit Mukhopadhyay—allegedly gang-raped the student.
According to the survivor, Mishra had been pressuring her to marry him despite her being in a relationship. He had threatened to harm her boyfriend and falsely implicate her parents and, when she refused, confined her to the college premises and carried out the attack.
Terrified and fighting for her life, the student claimed that she had begged for mercy and even touched the accused's feet, but they forcibly dragged her into the guard room, locked the main gate, and proceeded with the assault.
The shocking incident didn't end there, as the accused allegedly recorded the horrifying act and threatened to distribute the footage far and wide should the victim ever speak out against them. The grueling ordeal ended with the student being released under threats of further violence.
While the details of the assault are truly harrowing, it's important to note that the survivor's courage and determination to report the incident have sparked a wave of outrage and commitment to justice. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice of the case and urged the authorities to provide a detailed action report within three days.
Indeed, the case has already generated significant attention due to not only the severity of the assault but also the survivor's brave refusal to comply with Mishra's marriage proposal and the accused's alleged political connections. As the investigation unfolds, policymakers will undoubtedly be under pressure to address issues of sexual violence, particularly within educational institutions, and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their heinous acts.
The accused have since been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing, with the authorities examining CCTV footage and mobile phone records to build a comprehensive case against them. The fight for justice continues...
