Hey there! Let's dive into the latest nationwide police operation, code-named "Operation Hate," that's been launched with a mission to root out hate and incitement on the internet. Apartments in Emden and Bremen were among the targeted sites.

In Emden, an 18-year-old resident exhibited cooperation with the cops, as per Frank-Michael Laue, spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor's Office in Göttingen, to dpa. The local lad is suspected of slapping Nazi symbols and slogans all over Instagram. He stands accused of disseminating symbols of unconstitutional organizations. It's worth noting that Göttingen plays host to the Lower Saxony central office for combating hate crime online.

Swinging over to the vibrant city of Bremen, the local cops executed five search warrants in the areas of Walle, Huchting, Neustadt, and Horn-Lehe. Investigations were being carried out due to the suspicions of incitement of the people, as well as one case involving the distribution of propaganda material of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. Four men and one woman bouncing between the ages of 19 and 68 were fingered in the affair. The scoop includes the nabbing of mobile phones and data carriers.

What exactly was the Bremen-based investigations about? A YouTube post dripping with anti-Semitic sentiment, a post that spewed hatred against the Alawites on an unknown platform, a case of Holocaust denial on the same mysterious platform, and a refugee and asylum seeker-bashing post. Moreover, a video featuring the flag of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) was shared via an Instagram story.

Operation "Hate" spanned all across Germany, with the law enforcement authorities plunging head-first into 65 search warrants across 140 cases nationwide. Dozens of suspects were interrogated. However, no arrests were planned. Fancy numbers, huh? The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reported a striking 180 police measures in more than 140 cases.

Turns out online hate speech is skyrocketing. According to BKA stats, the number of reported criminal hate postings has surged every year, with last year's count hitting an alarming 10,732 cases. That's four times the number of cases in 2021! These staggering increases are attributed to the "illumination of the dark field."

Interestingly, Lower Saxony witnessed 5,344 cases last year, with almost half of them being dropped due to the culprit's untraceable identity or non-criminal nature of the content. Around a quarter of these cases were passed on to public prosecutors in other federal states. The remainder usually boasts a right-wing extremist background and involves hate speech with an anti-Semitic or racist sentiment. Surprisingly enough, there are also queer-hostile acts on the list.

The reports received by victim counseling centers criticize providers of social networks for slacking on protecting their users from online hate speech. "Reporting center Respect!" goes as far as imploring these platforms to pick up the pace, encouraging them to implement concrete safety measures to safeguard their users effectively. HateAid, an NGO based in Berlin, airs grievances about major players in the platform market, such as X or Facebook, who ignore hints and reports altogether too often. Additionally, law enforcement agencies sometimes struggle with these big fish's cooperation in this area.

Well, there you have it! Raging hate speech is threating the online world, and the German authorities are stepping up to the plate, dishing out raids and putting these grumps on notice that their days of harassing people online are numbered. Stay tuned for more updates, folks!

  1. The investigations in Bremen, part of Operation Hate, focused on alleged cases of incitement, distribution of terrorist organization propaganda, and online hate speech against various groups, such as Jews, Alawites, and refugees, as well as a shared post featuring the Islamic State's flag.
  2. In light of the escalating online hate speech issue in Germany, with a record 10,732 cases reported last year (four times the number in 2021), community and employment policies might need to address the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to ensure the safety and protection of online users.
