A Big Cat on the Loose in Saxony-Anhalt
Law enforcement issues alert about roaming large felines in southern Saxony-Anhalt region
Stray big cat sightings have stirred up quite the commotion in the southern region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The latest sighting happened near the Geiseltalsee, Braunsbedra, Saalekreis, as verified by the police and local authorities.
After receiving a tip about a video of a suspected predator on social media, the authorities launched an extensive search operation. They took to the skies with a helicopter, patrolled the area, and warned the public via the Nina warning app. The message was clear: "Keep your distance! Avoid meadows and forests when the animal is around." If anyone spots the animal, they should contact the fire and rescue service control center at 112.
Though experts have confirmed the video shows a big cat, its exact species remains a mystery. The authorities are leaning towards the possibility of a puma, but they're not entirely sure. A concrete identification has yet to be made.
This isn't the first time such an incident has occurred. Two summers ago, a widespread search was conducted in Kleinmachnow, southwest of Berlin, for an alleged lion — all for a wild boar in disguise. That incident sparked nationwide debates on handling dangerous wildlife.
While it's uncertain whether the spotted animal truly is a puma, the authorities in Saxony-Anhalt are taking the matter seriously. As the search continues, they urge everyone to stay cautious.
