Extended Four-Week Weapons Ban at Berlin Train Stations: The Details
Expanded Weapon Restriction Persists at Railway Stations in Berlin by German Federal Police - Law enforcement agencies expand firearm prohibition at Berlin train stations
In the bustling city of Berlin, authorities have decided to continue the crackdown on weapons at multiple train stations. The extended weapons ban, in effect until July 31, follows intensified checks on passengers and travelers with no specific reason needed, as announced by the Federal Police Directorate Berlin.
The decision comes after a period of increased incidents at the affected stations, which are Hauptbahnhof, Zoologischer Garten, Friedrichstraße, Alexanderplatz, Gesundbrunnen, Spandau, Ostbahnhof, Warschauer Straße, Ostkreuz, Lichtenberg, Neukölln, and Südkreuz.
Since May 26, a prohibition on carrying knives, axes, baseball bats, and other hazardous items has been in force at some Berlin train stations. The Federal Police consider this measure due to a spike in violent crimes at these locations, intending to curb violence and safeguard both fellow commuters and police officers. If rules are violated, the authorities may seize the objects and impose fines.
Secured Objects and Checks
Over the past four weeks, police have confiscated 319 prohibited objects, comprising 167 assorted knives, 20 bladed weapons, and 7 firearms. In total, 4,754 individuals were checked. In 279 cases, prohibited items were taken, with 180 violating the ban order and 82 breaching the general weapons law. Additionally, 422 criminal offenses were uncovered during these checks.
Effectiveness and Necessity Affirmed
Carsten Glade, the President of the Federal Police Directorate Berlin, emphasized that the implemented measures have proved effective and vital, given the current statistics. Thus, the extended timeline until July 31 is deemed necessary.
Furthermore, a weapons and knife ban will soon be enforced on Berlin's buses and trains. The Senate made this decision in late June, with the corresponding ordinance set to take effect by mid-July.
