Far-Right Extremists in Germany: A Persistent Problem

The Unyielding Presence

Law enforcement agencies countrywide are on a manhunt for 475 hidden right-wing extremists.

Germany faces a troubling reality: at least 475 far-right extremists continue to evade the law despite active arrest warrants against them. This troubling fact comes to light in a response to a minor inquiry by The Left in the Bundestag, as reported by "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung."

The Mounting Warrants

Given the frequent nature of their offenses, there are a staggering 627 outstanding arrest warrants in total. This significant number is alarming, given the suspected involvement of these extremists in terrorist underground activities identical to the infamous far-right NSU group, responsible for the deaths of ten individuals between 2000 and 2007. Since tracking began in 2014, this number has escalated—at that time, only 253 far-right extremists were wanted.

The Crime Wave

The police are searching for these extremists primarily due to acts of violence (125 people), including assault and resistance to law enforcement. Moreover, 109 suspects are wanted for politically motivated offenses, such as incitement, insult, and utilization of symbols from unconstitutional organizations. One individual is also sought for a suspected terrorist act.

Beyond the Borders

Security authorities believe that 58 extremists are abroad, predominantly in European Union countries—particularly in Austria and Poland.

A Matter of Urgency

The interior expert of The Left in the Bundestag, Ulla Jelpke, shrewdly notes, "The overall impression I get is that the Federal Government still underestimates the Nazi problem."

The Root Causes

Several factors contribute to the escalating problem of far-right extremism in Germany. These include political polarization, economic and social factors, global events, and the influence of populism and media.

  1. Political Polarization: Germany's growing political divide has created an environment that fosters extremism. The refugee crisis, which dates back to 2015, has exacerbated tensions and exacerbated societal divisions.
  2. Economic and Social Factors: Economic instability, unemployment, and perceived threats to cultural identity can fuel extremist sentiments. The financial crisis and subsequent austerity measures have contributed to feelings of insecurity among certain demographics.
  3. Global Events: Recent global events, such as the ongoing conflict in Gaza, have been linked to increased tensions and radicalization in Europe, including Germany. These events can intensify existing social divisions and strengthen extremist ideologies.
  4. Populism and Media Influence: The rise of populist movements and the influence of social media have also played a role. Such platforms can magnify extremist viewpoints and facilitate recruitment.

The Current Scene

As of 2025, Germany battles persistently with far-right extremism:

  • Arrests and Investigations: There has been an increased number of arrests related to far-right extremism, with recent cases involving young suspects charged with forming terrorist groups and committing violent acts against migrants and political opponents.
  • Increased Monitoring: The classification of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as "extremist" by Germany's spy agency has allowed for heightened state monitoring, reflecting the government's efforts to combat rising extremism.
  • Political Response: The government's response includes stern laws, enhanced surveillance, and initiatives to counter extremist ideologies through education and community engagement.

  1. The alarming number of outstanding arrest warrants for far-right extremists in Germany extends beyond war-and-conflicts and general-news, also being a matter of crime-and-justice, given their suspected involvement in terrorist activities.
  2. Aside from inside Germany, there are suspects wanted for far-right extremist activities who are currently abroad, mainly in other European Union countries, highlighting that the problem is not just a domestic issue but also a matter of politics and international relations.
