Laura Dahlmeier (aged 31) officially declared missing and presumed deceased without the aid of a rescue operation
Tragedy Strikes Biathlon Champion Laura Dahlmeier in Karakorum Mountains
Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic champion and seven-time world champion in biathlon, tragically lost her life during an expedition in the Pakistani Karakorum mountains on July 28. The 31-year-old German athlete died instantly after being struck by a rockfall at around 5,700 meters.
Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Krauss, attempted for many hours to reach her, but continued rockfall made it impossible. An emergency call was made, but Krauss was unable to safely reach Dahlmeier.
A rescue operation was initiated, but the extreme risk, difficult weather conditions, and treacherous terrain made recovery impossible for the rescue team. The recovery effort was halted due to the challenging conditions on Laila Peak and the ongoing risk of rockfall.
Despite the immediate rescue attempts, Dahlmeier's body could not be recovered. The management emphasized that Dahlmeier had specifically requested that no one risk their life to retrieve her if such a situation arose, and this wish was also shared by her family.
The exact location of Dahlmeier's body remains unrecovered. Krauss eventually decided to descend from the danger zone at night. A military helicopter overflight on July 29 confirmed Dahlmeier's death, but there were no signs of life.
After retiring from her career in biathlon in 2019, Dahlmeier remained a ZDF TV expert for the sport and dedicated herself passionately to mountaineering. The family thanks the rescue team and the mountaineers who came to help for their efforts.
The sudden death of Dahlmeier has shaken the sporting world, leaving a void among all those who knew and admired her. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.
