Launch of the bonus seconds propels Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney onto the General Classification (GC) podium of Tour de France Femmes during its initial mountain challenge
The 2024 Tour de France Femmes is proving to be a tough challenge for the riders, with Stage 6 presenting the first real mountain test for the overall contenders. Among the top competitors, Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney, the defending champion, is giving a strong performance.
Niewiadoma-Phinney, riding for Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto, is feeling better as the race progresses. Her legs are opening up, and she is making her presence felt in the peloton. Her teammate, Ricarda Bauernfeind, believes Niewiadoma-Phinney is in superb form.
In the 2025 edition of the Tour de France Femmes, Niewiadoma-Phinney finished third, behind Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and Demi Vollering. However, her performance in the 2024 race is yet to be fully detailed.
In the 2025 race, Niewiadoma-Phinney found herself towards the back of the favourites' group in Stage 6. Despite this, she managed to pick up two bonus seconds at the bonus sprint in Valcivières, which helped her move up in the general classification.
Niewiadoma-Phinney is currently third overall, 30 seconds behind Kim Le Court-Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal) and one second ahead of Demi Vollering (FDJ-SUEZ). Her bonus seconds were enough to leapfrog Vollering in the general classification.
Niewiadoma-Phinney and her teammate, Cédrine Kerbaol, attempted to gain time in the final of Stage 6, but they were unsuccessful. The descent from the Col du Béal, while impressive, was too far from the finish to capitalise on their move.
Bauernfeind's observation of Niewiadoma-Phinney's performance gives her extra motivation to push harder. Bauernfeind is looking forward to the next stages and hopes they can take the yellow jersey.
The three hardest stages of the Tour de France Femmes are still to come. With Niewiadoma-Phinney's determination and form, she is certainly a contender for the overall win.
