The "Beringia.Avacha" sled dog race, held annually in Russia, has seen a steady increase in difficulty each year. Originally starting as regional competitions in 2022, the event has since gained interregional and All-Russian status.
In its inaugural year, the race covered a distance of 310 kilometers and required athletes to overcome an elevation gain of over 4,500 meters. The competition was part of the winter festival "Beringia" and was known as the "Avacha Race."
In 2023, the competition was renamed "Beringia.Avacha" and gained interregional status, becoming the championship of two or more federal districts. The competition distance was shortened to 300 kilometers, but the elevation gain increased to more than 4,500 meters.
The following year, in 2024, the race became even more challenging. The distance was further reduced to 295 kilometers, but the elevation gain increased to over 5,000 meters. This made "Beringia.Avacha" the most challenging yet, with a shorter distance but a higher elevation gain compared to the previous years.
To add to the excitement, a night stage has been added to this year's race, making it a unique feature. The "Beringia.Avacha - 2025" race was grandly opened on February 10th, with the route passing through the Pinachevsky Pass and the central checkpoint of the Nalychevo Park.
The race is organized by the Avacha Running Club and attracts athletes from all over Russia. In 2024, Vladimir Rusanov, Minister of Tourism of the Kamchatka Krai, made a statement wishing participants good luck and strength.
The elevation change on the course for this year's race is five and a half thousand meters, making it one of the most demanding sled dog races in the country. The "Beringia.Avacha" competition has undergone a name change and a status upgrade each year, from regional competitions in 2022 to an All-Russian competition in 2024.
The "Beringia.Avacha - 2025" race is expected to be another thrilling event in the world of sled dog racing. With its increased difficulty and unique features, it is sure to attract even more participants and spectators in the coming years.
