Latvia's Sandis Vilmanis makes NHL debut weeks after Olympic run
Latvian hockey has reached another milestone as Sandis Vilmanis became the 13th player from the country to join the NHL. The 26-year-old forward made his debut on January 10, 2026, just weeks after competing for Latvia at the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. His rapid rise from the AHL to the global stage has drawn attention both at home and in North America.
Vilmanis' journey to the NHL began with a standout performance at the Olympics. In February, he helped Latvia secure a preliminary round victory over Germany, logging 18:10 of ice time and recording two shots on goal. Though the team did not medal, their improved showing marked progress for Latvian hockey on the world stage.
Less than a month later, Vilmanis received the call-up from the Florida Panthers. He described the transition as an 'emotional whirlwind,' moving quickly from Olympic competition to his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators on January 10. His family, who had travelled to support him at the Games, celebrated the moment as he took the ice in his first professional match.
Since joining the Panthers, Vilmanis has made an immediate impact. In 14 games this season, he has tallied four points (two goals, two assists) and delivered 28 hits, earning praise for his physical play. Teammate Uvis Balinskis, another Latvian and NHL veteran, has acted as a mentor, helping Vilmanis adjust to the league's demands. Head coach Paul Maurice also commended his sharpness in practice following the Olympics, noting his readiness to contribute.
Vilmanis follows a small but growing list of Latvian NHL players, including Sandis Ozolinsh, Sergei Zholtok, and Zemgus Girgensons. His arrival continues a trend of Latvian talent breaking into the league, with Elvis Merzlikins and Arturs Silovs among the recent additions. The Panthers now feature two Latvian players on their roster, a rare occurrence in NHL history.
The team's next game is set for Thursday at Amerant Bank Arena, where they will face the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7 p.m. ET.
Vilmanis' debut extends Latvia's presence in the NHL to 13 players, reinforcing the country's growing influence in professional hockey. His quick transition from Olympic competition to regular-season play demonstrates both his skill and adaptability. The Panthers will look to his energy and physicality as they prepare for their upcoming match against Toronto.
