Latvia’s November heatwave shatters decades-old temperature records

November 6, 2022, brought an unusual heatwave to Latvia, with temperatures soaring to record-breaking heights. The average daily air temperature was six degrees above normal, with some regions experiencing temperatures not seen since 1967.

The highest temperature recorded on this day was 14.3 degrees, set in 1967 at an observation station in Skulte. This year, the thermometer climbed to 13.6 degrees in Kolka and 13.2 degrees in Pāvilosta, nearing the record. By 3 p.m., temperatures varied from 8.6 degrees in Zosēni to a warm 12.6 degrees in Kolka and Mērsrags.

This heatwave was an anomaly for November, with temperatures typically ranging between 1 to 6 degrees Celsius at this time of year. The warm spell was short-lived, however, as temperatures returned to normal ranges in the following days.

The November 6 heatwave in Latvia was notable for its record-breaking temperatures, with some regions experiencing their warmest November day in decades. While this event was unusual, it serves as a reminder of the variability of Latvia's climate.
