Latino News Network Expands to Michigan with Community-Focused Journalism
The Latino News Network (LNN) has expanded into Michigan with the launch of Michigan Latino News (MILN), its ninth state-focused outlet. This move comes as the organisation strengthens its presence in regions where Latino communities often lack culturally relevant journalism. The new platform will publish digital stories immediately, addressing long-standing gaps in coverage for the state's 500,000-plus Hispanic and Latino residents. LNN's growth under Publisher Hugo Balta, who took over in 2019, has steadily increased its reach across the US. The network already operates outlets in states like Connecticut, Illinois, and California, each tailored to local Latino audiences. Michigan's addition follows this model, with a focus on community-driven reporting and solutions journalism.
Angeles Ponpa, Managing Editor for LNN Midwest, will lead the expansion. Her role includes overseeing collaborations that highlight underreported stories while supporting emerging Latino journalists. The initiative aims to counter the decline of local news nationwide, particularly in areas where Latino voices have been overlooked. MILN's launch responds to a clear need. Many Michigan residents have struggled to find news that reflects their cultural experiences. By prioritising partnerships and grassroots storytelling, the outlet plans to fill this void with content created by and for the community.
The new Michigan outlet will operate alongside LNN's existing state-based platforms. Its immediate digital rollout signals a commitment to accessible, representative journalism. For now, no further state expansions have been announced beyond the current nine newsrooms.
