Inland fisheries and aquaculture are set to receive a significant boost with the inauguration of key projects by the Union Minister. The event, known as the "Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025," was held on June 13th, 2025, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Organized by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the meet aimed to promote sustainable inland fisheries and aquaculture practices, enhance fish production, and boost the livelihood of fishing communities.
The Union Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for these projects with a total outlay of Rs.52 crores under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). These projects will focus on fish farming in freshwater and brackish water using methods like pond culture, cage farming, RAS, and Biofloc systems.
The meet also saw the distribution of certificates to beneficiaries including fisheries Cooperatives, FFPOs, and Fisheries Start-ups. Furthermore, fishers were awarded Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) and aquaculture insurance, marking a significant step towards supporting the livelihoods of those in the fishing industry.
India's participation in the meet underscores its commitment to sustainable inland fisheries development, enhancement of aquaculture technologies and productivity, and strengthening fisher communities and livelihood opportunities. The event also included policy discussions aligned with national programs like PM Matsya Sampada Yojana and Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund.
In addition to its domestic focus, India has been a longstanding and committed member of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) since its inception in 1957. India's election as Vice President of IALA during the 1st General Assembly in Singapore reflects its growing global influence and strategic maritime vision. The Indian delegation, led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterway, actively contributed to harmonizing marine aids to navigation and building capacity to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible maritime operations.
The IALA Council, the key decision-making body of the intergovernmental organization, discussed key technical matters during the event. These included harmonization of marine aids to navigation, conservation of lighthouse heritage, emerging developments such as the Harmonized Internet of Things (IoT) protocol for visual AtoN, Maritime Service Registry specifications, and program schedule for IALA activities planned for 2025 and 2026.
The event was conducted in hybrid mode, allowing for both physical and virtual participation. India extended a formal invitation to all member states to attend the 3rd IALA General Assembly in December 2025 and the 21st IALA Conference in 2027, both to be held in Mumbai.
The rise of India as the second largest fish producer globally and the government's emphasis on blue revolution and fisheries infrastructure development have positioned the country as a leader in sustainable inland fisheries and aquaculture practices. As such, the Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025 is a significant step in India's journey towards achieving its broader fisheries sector growth and sustainability goals.
