An Unraveled Sitcom on TikTok: Sydney Robinson's "The Group Chat"

Gaze upon TikTok, and it begins to mirror the small screen. The latest internet sensation resembling a binge-worthy soap opera is none other than "The Group Chat" - a multi-episode series by TikToker Sydney Robinson.

The narrative spins around a group of friends planning a dinner, but one of them, Hailey, desires to bring her significant other, Justin, to the gathering. "Justin really had a grisly day, I wouldn't want to leave him alone," Hailey expresses in the group chat.

Not every friend is enthused about the prospect of Justin tagging along. "Is she serious? She's trying to bring her boyfriend again," one character groans. What transpires next is an uproarious effort to "uninvite" Justin and more drama.

Robinson, aged 27, recounted her motive behind the TikTok series in an interview with "Today." She drew inspiration while catching an episode of "Jersey Shore: Family Vacation," where the cast member Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino announces his release from jail through their group chat. "He texts everyone that he's out, and they're all on vacation in a house sleeping... I was like, 'That feeling.' I wanted to recreate that," Robinson stated.

The plot has resonated deeply with audiences, going viral since its introduction on March 30th. Even UPS voiced their admiration for the series, commenting, "Everybody quiet ... my show is on," on one of Robinson's videos. Intrigued celebrities like Bethenny Frankel, Leslie Jones, Hailey Bieber, and Charlie Puth have all responded positively to the series.

The connection between the series characters and the Bieber duo sparked curiosity. However, Robinson clarified that Hailey's character was based on Haley James Scott from the series "One Tree Hill," not Mrs. Bieber.

When Charlie Puth left a comment expressing his enthusiasm for the second episode, Robinson was taken aback. "I'm so invested in this..." Puth wrote, to which Robinson jokingly responded, "Sorry, I can't make a part 3 - I've simply passed away."

Eagerly awaiting the release of the fourth episode, Robinson teased her followers with a trailer, which certainly didn't disappoint. The episode saw the group meet up at the restaurant, where a plot twist unfolded, revealing Justin's presence in a manner unexpected by viewers.

What was more surprising was that Puth lent his voice to the character of Justin. Robinson admitted that she was astonished that he agreed to join her project after they exchanged messages regarding his interest in the skits. "I have no idea why this colossal figure in the music industry with 22 million followers would want to be a part of my 'Group Chat' skit," she said.

Unsurprisingly, Robinson has garnered an ever-expanding fanbase herself. Currently, she boasts over 1.2 million followers, and "The Group Chat" videos have garnered more than 77 million views.

Who is Charlie Puth?

Quite understandably, contenders may be curious about the enigmatic Charlie Puth, but further connections between the singer and "The Group Chat" remain elusive. The American singer, songwriter, and record producer hails from Rumson, New Jersey, born on December 2, 1991. Puth skyrocketed to international acclaim with ballads like "See You Again" from the movie Fast & Furious 7. In addition to captivating audiences with his powerful vocal performances, Puth has garnered multiple awards and collaborated with numerous artists.
