Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief: July 29, 2025

Welcome to the Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief! Today, we bring you the latest news in Annapolis, Maryland.

A tragic incident occurred in Lothian over the weekend, as a fatal motorcycle crash claimed the life of a local resident. The accident took place at the intersection of Mount Zion Marlboro Road and Main Street on Friday evening. The Annapolis Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Team is currently investigating the incident.

The motorcycle involved was a 2009 Yamaha Star, driven by Katrina M. Prieur, a 43-year-old resident of Upper Marlboro. Prieur was ejected from the motorcycle and flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with life-threatening injuries. Sadly, she passed away the following day. The driver of the other vehicle, a 20-year-old from Bowie, was not injured.

Moving on, Anne Arundel County is making significant strides in supporting local nonprofits. Through the Community Support Grant Program, sixty-five organisations across the county are receiving funding, ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Recipients include the Chesapeake Children's Museum, The Light House, YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, and dozens more. The funding, totaling $2 million, is being used to support groups working in underserved communities and addressing equity, health, education gaps, and inclusion.

In other news, there's a new chance for residents to ease their student loan debt. The Maryland Higher Education Commission is offering a Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit program. Maryland residents with at least $20,000 in incurred student loan debt and $5,000 still outstanding may be eligible. However, it's important to note that the deadline to apply for the tax credit is September 15, and recipients will need to prove that the credit was used to pay down debt-or be required to repay it.
