Latest Headlines: Events in Independence, Edgewood, Erlanger, Boone County, and Fort Wright
In the heart of Kentucky, several cities and counties are making strides in their respective developments. Let's take a look at the latest news in Independence, Erlanger, Edgewood, Boone County, and Fort Wright.
Independence, KY has approved the purchase of a 1-2 acre tract of land next to the city sign on Pelly Road. This move aims to prevent future development and maintain a green entryway to the city. The city council voted unanimously to acquire the property for $85,000 based on an independent appraisal, emphasizing the purchase as a public benefit to protect the city’s appearance. This purchase adds to the about 25 acres the city recently bought on the opposite side of the road.
Meanwhile, in Erlanger, discussions revolve around truck parking issues. Commissioner Cathy Flaig emphasized the need to get trucks off streets and parking lots, not building large structures. Commissioner Chet Hand proposed creating a classification for truck parking specifically. The land in question in Independence is adjacent to the 'front door' of the city where the American flag flies, raising similar concerns.
In other news, the city of Erlanger has a new city administrator, Mark Collier, who will take over on August 31. The business Spotlight was on Fabled Brew Works, who presented a check to the city for $350 from the proceeds of a new beer.
Elsewhere in Boone County, Boone County Commissioners heard a presentation about commercial vehicle parking issues, with trucks and trailers clogging streets and parking lots in most parts of the county. Walmart requested temporary seasonal storage on their lot, but the issue was tabled until a representative could explain their side.
In Edgewood, the city council passed a motion adopting the Statewide Emergency Mutual Aid Agreement. Erlanger also supported the effort for the statewide emergency mutual aid, passing a municipal order to this effect.
In Fort Wright, a first reading of an ordinance declared a public right of way on a small street off Madison Pike, causing concern for restaurants Arby's and Sonic due to traffic conflicts. Judge Executive Gary Moore suggested creating a place for law enforcement to legally park trucks, but noted that rest stops on expressways might not help city areas.
As for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), no new developments or ordinance changes have been reported in Independence, Edgewood, Erlanger, Boone County, or Fort Wright as of August 2025. Similarly, no current updates or changes to animal control ordinances are reported for these locations. The status of emergency mutual aid agreements among the named cities and county remains unclear.
Additional notes on land listings in Independence show other parcels for sale, such as a 4.5-acre lot at 1480 Rising Ridge Dr and a 0.64-acre lot at 772 Cox Rd, which appear to be private real estate listings rather than city land purchases.
