Firing Up the Summer: Croatian Clubs Shore Up Squads Ahead of 2023 Season

The heat is on for Croatian football clubs as they're bolstering their ranks ahead of the 2023 season. Here's the lowdown on the latest arrivals at Dinamo, Hajduk, Rijeka, Osijek, and Šibenik.

Dinamo Zagreb

22-year-old Bosko Šutalo from Atalanta joins the squad as a towering reinforcement. After reportedly splashing out 3 million euros on the transfer, Šutalo becomes one of Dinamo's most expensive acquisitions ever. Born in Metković, he previously played for Neretva and Split before moving to Osijek. After spending a year in the Serie A, he signed for Atalanta and played on loan last season.

"I am overjoyed to join Dinamo," Šutalo said. "Dinamo is Croatia's most successful club with consistent achievements in domestic and European competitions. I'll fight for the club in every match, and I hope we'll have massive fan support throughout the season."

Hajduk Split

Toni Borevković is the latest Hajduk addition. The 25-year-old defender underwent medicals in Zagreb and joined the team's training camp in Austria. On a one-year loan from Portuguese powerhouse Vitória de Guimarães, Borevković will wear the number 5 for Hajduk.

First name:

Hailing from Slavonski Brod, Borevković began his career at Marsonia before moving to Dinamo in 2012. He spent four years there, followed by a stint at Rudar, where he made over sixty appearances. In 2018, he joined the Portuguese city of Rio Ave and recorded over 80 appearances in three seasons. Last year he joined the ranks of Vitória de Guimarães, for which he played 24 games.

"My ambitions align with Hajduk," said Borevković after signing. "I came to fight for the title. I followed Hajduk and the Croatian First League last season; we won the trophy, but were slightly short of taking the second. I believe we can make that happen in the new season."

Last name:

Rijeka

Mario Vrancic is the newest Rijeka player, joining on a one-year loan with a possible contract buyout. The creative midfielder spent last season with Stoke City in the Championship. With a glittering career that includes spells at Mainz, Paderborn, Darmstadt, Norwich City, and Stoke City, Rijeka offers Vrancic a fresh challenge.

Gender:

"I'm thrilled to be a Rijeka player," Vrancic said. "This represents a new chapter in my career, and I'm excited about the opportunity to prove myself. I've played with Josip Drmic, Antonio Čolak, and Roman Bezjak before, and I can't wait to contribute to the team's success."

Meanwhile, Mateo Pavlović also joined Rijeka this week. After spells at Zagreb, Werder, Ferencvaros, Angers, and Amiens, the midfielder said, "I'm eager and excited to be in Rijeka. The club wanted me, and that was a deciding factor. I can't wait to wear the shirt and make my mark on the pitch."

Osijek and Šibenik

Country:

Keep an eye on Osijek as they've offloaded Damjan Bohar to Polish first league club Zaglebie Lubin, and Mirlind Daku is set for another loan spell at Slovenian club Mura. As for Šibenik, Duje Čop has returned after a decade, joining on a one-year loan from Dinamo.

While the details for Osijek and Šibenik may not be as prominent, it's clear that the Croatian clubs are embracing fresh talent as they prepare to challenge for the 2023 season.
