Late night talk show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' temporarily suspended following controversial remark about Charlie Kirk.
Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live," has been indefinitely suspended by ABC following his comments about the shooting of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.
On Monday, Kimmel spoke about Kirk's death on his show, expressing his condolences and criticizing the political reactions, particularly those of Trump's supporters. He accused the "MAGA crowd" of attempting to portray the killer as someone other than one of their own and exploiting the tragedy for political gain. Kimmel also mocked Trump's response to Kirk's death, comparing it to a 4-year-old mourning a goldfish.
These comments led to a backlash, with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr expressing concern over the content of "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Carr suggested the commission could open an investigation into the show for distorted comments. He also called for local broadcasters to stop airing the programme.
Nexstar Media Group, an owner of ABC TV affiliates, found Kimmel's comments about Kirk's death offensive and insensitive. The FCC has the potential to investigate "Jimmy Kimmel Live" for distorted comments, and broadcasters could potentially face fines or loss of licenses if there is a pattern of such behaviour.
Prosecutors have announced they will seek the death penalty against the suspected killer of Charlie Kirk, and a man has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Seven state charges have been brought against the accused, including aggravated murder.
Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University last week. Kirk was widely credited with helping Trump take back the White House in 2024 by galvanizing conservative youth to vote for him.
Kimmel's description of the MAGA gang's attempts to characterize the shooter as not being one of them as "new lows" has added fuel to the controversy. The future of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" remains uncertain, with ABC yet to announce any plans for a replacement.
