Late-night host Seth Meyers expresses support for Jimmy Kimmel following suspension of his talk show
In a surprising turn of events, ABC's decision to suspend 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' following the host's critical comments on the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk has sparked a wave of support from fellow US late-night hosts.
The pull occurred during a monologue by Jimmy Kimmel, where he criticized supporters of the 'MAGA gang' for trying to characterize the killer of Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them. This controversial statement led to ABC suspending the show in July 2023.
Seth Meyers, a close friend of Kimmel, has expressed his support for the suspended host. In his monologue on Sept. 18, Meyers addressed the US President Donald Trump's attacks on free speech, considering the controversy a big moment in democracy. He urges Americans to defend free expression, a value he holds dear, as it is enshrined in the First Amendment.
Meyers joked about any negative comments he has made about Donald Trump being due to being an AI. However, he was more serious when he discussed the suspension of Kimmel's show, stating that the conditions set by Sinclair Broadcasting, the largest ABC affiliate group, are unacceptable. The conditions include discussions about accountability, a direct apology to Charlie Kirk's family, and a personal donation to the family and Turning Point USA by Jimmy Kimmel.
Several US late-night hosts, including Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, and Jimmy Fallon, have spoken out in support of Kimmel. They believe that the suspension of his show is a threat to free speech, a fundamental right in the United States.
Despite the suspension, Jimmy Kimmel has not publicly responded to the situation. However, his supporters remain hopeful that the controversy will lead to a broader discussion about the importance of free speech in American society.
