Zelensky's call: Durable Peace is Imperative - Lasting Peace is Imperative, asserts Zelensky

In a significant development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently in Washington, where he met with US President Donald Trump. The meeting comes as both leaders seek a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has been raging since February 2022.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of securing Ukraine's safety before engaging in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He criticized Russia for its avoidance of high-level meetings and demanded the return of prisoners, accountability for war crimes, and the reversal of annexations.

The Ukrainian President also highlighted the Crimea as a territory that Ukraine was forced to give up in the past, comparing it to Kyiv, Odessa, or Kharkiv. He expressed concerns about the potential for a new attack by Putin, urging Russia to end the war it started.

Zelensky's concerns are not unfounded. Putin has used past territorial concessions as a stepping stone for a new attack. The European allies are also set to participate in the meeting, as they too seek a lasting peace in Ukraine.

However, prospects for peace talks remain low due to ongoing violence, mutual distrust, and disagreements on key issues such as security guarantees and territorial claims. Past peace talks have failed largely due to irreconcilable positions, with Russia wanting territorial gains and limits on Ukraine's military and NATO ambitions, while Ukraine demands complete withdrawal and restoration of sovereignty.

Zelensky warned against half-baked deals to end the war, citing the example of past security guarantees that did not prevent further conflict. He emphasized that any peace agreement must be lasting and meaningful.

In a post on the X platform, Zelensky wrote, "Peace must be lasting. It must be just. And it must be real." As the world watches, the hope remains that this meeting will bring about a meaningful step towards a lasting peace in Ukraine.
