Last year's Stanley Cup final will host the game.

In the second consecutive year, the NHL Stanley Cup Final will showcase a rematch between the reigning champion Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers, marking only the fifth time in the league's expansion era that the same teams face off for the coveted trophy in consecutive seasons.

Both teams cruised through their conference finals, with Edmonton dispatching the Carolina Hurricanes in four games, and Florida besting the Dallas Stars in five. The Oilers' victory in the fifth game on the road, against Dallas by a score of 6-3, was particularly noteworthy, contributing to the mounting intrigue surrounding this season's playoffs.

While the league continues to be characterized by its fluid hierarchy and high competition, the repetition of the same finalists has sparked questions about this notion. The last time a similar occurrence happened was over a decade ago, in 2008 and 2009, when the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins battled for the Stanley Cup in consecutive years, with Detroit taking the first and Pittsburgh the second.

The paths to the finals for both Florida and Edmonton were somewhat shaky. Although they gained entry into the final round with relative ease, the Oilers' semifinal series against the Dallas Stars was expected to be more challenging. The Stars were seen as a formidable, deep team that was expected to mount a tougher opposition, given the premium placed on discipline and error-free defense in playoff hockey. However, Edmonton managed to take the series with a convincing 4-1 win.

The fifth game of the Dallas series saw the Stars start the game disastrously, conceding three goals in less than half a period. Starting goaltender Jake Oettinger was replaced before the third goal, with backup Casey DeSmith having to step in. Despite twice coming close to tying the game, Dallas ultimately fell short, while Edmonton's forwards shone with their outstanding plays, including a brilliant run by captain Connor McDavid that resulted in a one-on-one goal against DeSmith, and a deflection by Evander Kane that found the back of the net off Dallas defenseman Esa Lindell's skate.

Fans of both teams are now faced with pressing questions as the final approaches. Those rooting for the Edmonton Oilers must address concerns about the serious injury to forward Zach Hyman, who could be sidelined for several weeks. Although not a key offensive player, Hyman is vital for his contributions in physical battles, an area where Florida excels. It remains to be seen if Edmonton can match the Panthers' physicality and hold their own in board battles without Hyman.

Supporters of the Florida Panthers, on the other hand, are worried about the form of Edmonton's two leaders, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Despite their recent stellar performances and outstanding playoff statistics, Florida managed to edge them out in the previous season's final, even though both players were in equally formidable form then.

Edmonton enters the final with its core forwards playing at their peak, a factor that will be crucial in their quest to avenge last year's Game 7 loss to Florida. With the playoff action set to resume, fans can expect an intense and fiercely contested series between the two teams.

The upcoming NHL Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers, a rematch from last year, will be played with both teams demonstrating their dominance over their respective conference opponents, specifically in the conference finals where the Oilers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in four games and the Panthers edged out the Dallas Stars in five. With the NHL noting a repetition of the same finalists, fan bases of both teams are confronted with pressing concerns leading up to the final, such as Edmonton's injury to forward Zach Hyman and Florida's ability to contain Edmonton's star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
