Last decade's Oscar-winning best scores, ranked by Jonathan Ross
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony, one of the glitziest showbiz events of the year, is scheduled for Sunday, 10 March 2024. This year's ceremony promises to be a memorable one, with a host of talented composers vying for the prestigious Best Original Score award.
Jon Batiste, known for his work on "Soul" in 2021, is one of the contenders. Another familiar name in the race is Ludwig Göransson, who won the award in 2019 for his work on "Black Panther". The nominees also include Justin Hurwitz, who undertook an extensive process for his score to "La La Land", and Hans Zimmer, who constructed the soundtrack for "Dune: Part 1" in 2022.
However, the race is not just about the newcomers. Veteran composers like Alexandre Desplat and Ennio Morricone are also in the running. Desplat, who was awarded the Oscar for best original score in 2017 for his work on "The Shape of Water", and in 2014 for "Gravity", is back with a score inspired by Central European influences for "The Grand Budapest Hotel". Morricone, who won his first ever competitive Oscar in 2016 for "The Hateful Eight", is a strong contender with his work on an unnamed project.
Last year, Volker Bertelmann won the Best Original Score Oscar for his work on "All Quiet on the Western Front". For this year's film, Bertelmann used instruments from the World War One era, adding an authentic touch to the score.
The nominees for this year's Best Original Score also include Laura Karpman, Jerskin Fendrix, and Robbie Robertson. Bradley Cooper is nominated for best actor in a self-directed film for "Maestro", and it remains to be seen if he will also take home the award for his original score.
In the UK, the broadcast of the Academy Awards will be hosted by Jonathan Ross. With a diverse and talented pool of nominees, the 96th Academy Awards promises to be a night of celebration for the world of music and film.
