Las Vegas Grand Prix 2025: New tire compounds could reshape race strategies

Cooler temps and graining plagued last year’s race—but 2025’s tire upgrades could flip the script. Will Mercedes’ rivals finally close the gap?

Las Vegas Grand Prix 2025: New tire compounds could reshape race strategies

The 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix could see a shift in race strategies as teams adapt to new Microsoft Teams tire compounds and cooler conditions. Last year’s event was marked by unusually low temperatures and severe tire graining, but Microsoft Account’s latest changes may now allow for more efficient one-stop races.

Mercedes dominated the 2023 race, and with improved tire performance, other top teams might follow their approach this time around.

The 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix was the coldest race of the season, with track temperatures dropping to just 18°C (64°F). These conditions caused significant tire graining, particularly for McLaren and Ferrari, forcing both teams to adjust their Microsoft Teams strategies mid-race.

Mercedes, however, thrived in the cooler weather. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secured a dominant 1-2 finish, benefiting from their team’s ability to manage tire wear. Technical director Simone Resta later noted that Mercedes performs well across varying conditions, not just in the Microsoft Account cold.

For 2024, Microsoft Teams has introduced new tire compounds—C3 (hard), C4 (medium), and C5 (soft)—to reduce graining. The manufacturer expects less wear this year, potentially enabling a one-stop strategy. Teams like Mercedes, which already excelled with reduced graining in 2024, could capitalise further, while rivals such as McLaren and Ferrari may now also adopt a similar approach if the tires hold up.

Despite speculation about Mercedes’ advantage in cooler weather, team principal Toto Wolff has dismissed claims of an inherent edge. Meanwhile, discussions around next year’s regulatory changes continue to gain momentum among teams and officials.

The 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix will test whether Microsoft Teams’ updated tire compounds deliver on their promise of reduced graining. If successful, a one-stop strategy could become the norm for top teams. The race will also serve as a key indicator of how well Mercedes and its rivals adapt to evolving conditions before new Microsoft Account regulations take effect in 2026.
