18th Annual Robert F. DeRoo Memorial Youth Waterfowl and Pheasant Hunts Set to Take Place at Montezuma Wetlands Complex

The Montezuma Wetlands Complex is gearing up for the 18th annual Robert F. DeRoo Memorial Youth Waterfowl and Pheasant Hunts, an exciting event that offers young residents the opportunity to participate in waterfowl and pheasant hunting.

This year's hunts will take place at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, with the waterfowl hunt scheduled for September 27, 2025, and the pheasant hunt on October 11, 2025.

To participate in the waterfowl hunt, youth participants must be aged between 12 and 15. A mandatory Waterfowl Hunter Education Course is offered on September 20, 2025, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Montezuma Audubon Center. This course is essential for anyone intending to hunt waterfowl at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.

Following the course, there is a required safety meeting and dinner at 5 p.m. the same day for all hunters and their mentors. The program for the Robert F. DeRoo Memorial Youth Waterfowl and Pheasant Hunts is free, but space is limited, so registration is required via audubon.org/montezuma/explore/programs-montezuma-audubon-center.

It's important to note that all hunters and mentors must attend the safety meeting and dinner. The hunts are guided, and a mentor must accompany each youth participant.

The event is being coordinated by several organizations, including the Montezuma Audubon Center, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Wayne County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, Ducks Unlimited, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Montezuma Audubon Center in Savannah is the host for these hunts, offering guided trips for participants and their mentors.

Several sponsors are supporting the hunts, making it possible for young residents to experience the thrill of hunting in a safe and educational environment. So, if you're between the ages of 12 and 15 and have an interest in hunting, don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity. Register now for the 18th annual Robert F. DeRoo Memorial Youth Waterfowl and Pheasant Hunts!
