Portuguese football clubs received approximately €3.5 million in loan fees for players sent to national teams from 2020 to 2024, with Benfica earning the largest share of this sum.

Large sum of money allocated for player loans, amounting to €3.5 million.

In the coming years, featuring two Nations League editions and the qualification and final phase of Euro2024, a whopping 3,446,085.80 euros were handed out to 19 Portuguese clubs, with Benfica emerging as the highest recipient, pocketing almost €1.3 million.

The loan of players to European teams brought in some funds for FC Porto (€781,000) and Sporting (€524,000), while lesser-known clubs like Marco and Vianense received around €22,000 each.

European powerhouses, primarily English clubs, had reason to cheer, as they benefited from approximately 46 million euros. The other countries in the five main European leagues trailed behind, with Italy (35 million euros), Germany (30 million euros), Spain (22 million euros), and France (11 million euros) making up the rest.

In terms of individual clubs, Manchester City, with Portuguese internationals Ruben Dias, Matheus Nunes, and Bernardo Silva, pocketed around €5 million. Real Madrid was no less with approximately €4.8 million, followed by Inter Milan (€4.6 million), FC Barcelona (€4.4 million), and Paris Saint-Germain (€4.4 million), with Bayern Munich earning €4.3 million.

Overall, UEFA disseminated a record-breaking €233 million among 901 clubs from all 55 member nations of European football's governing body. Although details about Euro 2024 and Nations League distributions were unavailable, one can expect similar patterns based on the awarding of funds to clubs across various UEFA competitions.

  1. The qualification and final phase of Euro2024 might follow a similar pattern, as UEFA could distribute more funds to clubs, similar to the 3,446,085.80 euros given out in recent years.
  2. Portuguese clubs, such as Benfica, FC Porto, and Sporting, could potentially benefit from this upcoming distribution, considering the substantial funds they received in the past.
  3. In addition to Portuguese clubs, European leagues like the Premier League, Serie A, Laliga, Bundesliga, and La Liga could also see their teams receiving significant amounts of money.
  4. The NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, and hockey clubs in other European countries might not be directly involved in these distributions, as they operate outside UEFA's jurisdiction.
  5. However, American football could find its way into UEFA competitions if its European teams perform well, potentially earning funds through the Champions League or other tournaments.
  6. Basketball clubs in Europe might also benefit from UEFA distributions, especially if they have strong partnerships with football clubs, as demonstrated by the success of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
  7. While the specific amounts for each club in these leagues are uncertain, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, FC Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain could potentially top the list, their numbers influenced by their Portuguese internationals.
  8. The records set by UEFA in the recent distribution could serve as a benchmark for future monetary allocations, indicating a growing trend of economic support for European football clubs.
