Large sum of 2.6 million pounds allocated for accommodating homeless refugees in Shropshire
Shropshire Council has announced a significant investment of £2.62 million to provide housing for refugees who have been displaced by conflicts in Ukraine and Afghanistan. The funding, a combination of government and local contributions, will be used to purchase 40 homes to accommodate these individuals.
The council has received £1.2 million from the government as part of the funding, with the UK Home Office providing the largest share for the 10 new accommodations for refugees from Afghanistan. Shropshire Council will match fund the round two allocation with £450,000 from 'section 106' funds and an additional £970,000 of borrowing.
At present, Shropshire does not have any bridging hotels for Afghan refugees. However, families are currently being accommodated elsewhere in the West Midlands. The new homes, ranging from two to four bedrooms, will serve as temporary accommodation for some of these families.
Nine of the proposed new homes will be offered to households currently in bridging hotels in the West Midlands. The remaining homes will be used to alleviate wider homelessness pressures once the immediate need to help refugee families affected by conflicts has been addressed.
The tenth home will be used as temporary accommodation, contributing to the council's efforts to assist where possible in providing settled accommodation for refugees. The council aims to complete the purchases by 2024.
This announcement follows the provision of 30 homes from round one of the funding. The additional 40 homes will further enhance Shropshire Council's capacity to support refugees in need.
The council's commitment to providing housing for homeless refugees reflects its dedication to supporting those displaced by conflict and ensuring they have a safe and secure place to call home.
