Large-scale rave event attended by over a thousand people at a wind energy facility in Drôme region
In the Drôme region of France, an unauthorised rave party has been taking place since early August 2025, disrupting peace and posing ecological risks to a protected natural site. The location of this event is at the foot of the Terres Blanches wind farm, between Lens-Lestang and Le Grand-Serre.
The site in question is a Zone Naturelle d'Intérêt Écologique, Faunistique et Floristique (ZNIEFF), a designated area intended to preserve biodiversity. The presence of the rave party threatens the environmental integrity of this zone, prompting authorities to take action.
Over 1,200 participants have been attending this event, causing significant disturbances including violent clashes between partygoers and about 100 mobilized gendarmes. More than 100 offences have been recorded, and substantial seizure of sound equipment and impoundment of around 50 vehicles have taken place.
The escalating tensions and ongoing clashes highlight the difficulties law enforcement face in managing unauthorised mass gatherings in protected areas. The Drôme prefecture issued an order banning rave parties throughout the department from June 3 to September 1, but the event continues as of early August 2025.
Mayor of Lens-Lestang, François Faure, understands the appeal of setting up in an isolated location but regrets the choice of the ZNIEFF area. The party is taking place in a wind farm and enclosures, adding to the concerns about the event's impact on the environment.
As the rave party continues, authorities are working diligently to end the event and mitigate any damage caused. The event is scheduled to end on Sunday at noon, but its conclusion remains to be seen. The authorities' efforts underscore the importance of preserving protected natural areas and maintaining public order.
