Large-scale Overhaul of Harbors and Waterfront Facilities
Graciosa's Long-Awaited Marina Project Moves Forward
The Santa Cruz da Graciosa marina, known as the Barra recreational marina, is set to become a reality after the tender for its construction was unanimously approved by the municipal council. This major public works project in Portugal is estimated to cost over €3.2 million, excluding VAT.
The marina project, a structural investment for the island, will take approximately 1 year and 8 months to complete. The project includes the construction of a 225-metre breakwater, an 80-metre jetty, a reclaimed area of 3,500 sqm, pedestrian walkways, dredging of the basin and access channel, floating docks, fuel supply facilities, service buildings, safety and control installations, and full utility connections.
Mayor António Reis, the representative of the Somos Todos Graciosa coalition (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), stated that the marina project is a long-awaited development by the people of Graciosa. He noted that it is the largest public works project ever undertaken by the island's sole municipality.
The Regional Government of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) has confirmed its financial support for the marina's construction. President José Manuel Bolieiro signed an ARAAL Agreement for the project during an official visit.
Interested parties must submit their proposals via the ACINGOV electronic platform by August 27, 2025. The mayor remains confident that the tender will attract bidders due to inquiries from potential interested companies.
The marina project is intended to support nautical tourism and recreational boating, enhancing the island’s capacity in these areas. The project is a significant step forward for Graciosa, promising to bring new opportunities for the local community and visitors alike.
