Lapu-Lapu City paralyzed by record-breaking December downpour and flooding

Heavy rainfall struck Lapu-Lapu City on Monday, December 1, 2025, causing widespread flooding and traffic chaos. The downpour, measuring 114 mm in just three hours, overwhelmed drainage systems and disrupted daily life across several barangays. Schools, roads, and public transport were severely affected by the sudden deluge. The extreme weather today was triggered by an intensification of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, dumping an unusual amount of rain for December. According to Pagasa Visayas, the 114 mm recorded equalled roughly 570,000 drums of water per square kilometre. Floodwaters quickly rose, reaching knee-deep levels in Barangays Basak, Ibo, Pajo, and Pajac. The city’s response teams continue declogging and dewatering efforts to restore normal conditions. While no casualties were reported, residents remain cautious as recovery operations progress. Officials are monitoring weather updates today to prevent further disruptions.
