State Agency Seeks Photos of Wolf Scat - LANUV Seeks Wolf Scat Photos to Track NRW Population

The Landesamt für Natur, Umwelt und Verbraucherschutz Nordrhein-Westfalen (LANUV) is appealing to nature enthusiasts in the region. They're seeking photos of wolf scat to investigate the spread of wolves in NRW. This initiative aims to monitor and understand wolf territories better.

Wolf scat, or droppings, play a crucial role in tracking these elusive creatures. LANUV explains that wolf scat is larger than that of other canids, often containing hair, bone fragments, and remnants of prey. These clues help experts identify the animal responsible.

To contribute, hikers and hunters are encouraged to snap pictures of suspected wolf scat during their outdoor activities. These photos can then be uploaded via LANUV's Wolf Portal for expert review. If deemed suitable, an employee will collect a sample for a DNA test, helping to pinpoint the wolf's origin and track its movements.

DNA samples are also gathered from suspected wolf kills, providing additional insights into the wolf population and their prey.

LANUV's initiative relies on the eyes and cameras of nature lovers in NRW. By sharing photos of wolf scat, these individuals can significantly aid in understanding and managing the wolf population in the region. The collected data will help LANUV monitor wolf territories, ensuring the safety and well-being of both wolves and local communities.
