Landslides sever Beira Baixa railway, stranding riverside communities for months
Heavy storms have triggered severe landslides along the Beira Baixa railway line, cutting off train services for nearly three weeks. The damage stretches between Belver and Barca d'Amieira, leaving riverside communities stranded without reliable transport links.
The landslides struck the Mouriscas A–Vila Velha de Ródão segment, a key route along the Tejo River corridor. Residents in isolated hamlets like Belver and Barca d'Amieira now face extended travel difficulties, with no official replacement services in place.
Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has yet to arrange coordinated road shuttles, despite weeks of disruption. While discussions with rail operators about alternative transport—including bus services—are underway, passengers remain without immediate solutions.
Repairs to the damaged line are expected to last at least six months. Difficult terrain and access challenges mean trains will not resume before late summer, prolonging the hardship for local communities.
The suspension of train services has left interior Portugal residents without essential connections. With repairs stretching into late summer, affected passengers continue to push for temporary transport options. IP's ongoing talks with operators aim to address the growing demand for alternative travel arrangements.
