Landon Donovan, the all-time leading goal and assist scorer for the United States Men's National Team (USMNT), recently made a series of insightful comments at a Sprint-sponsored event celebrating the Copa America Centenario.

In 2010, Donovan scored a game-winning goal against Algeria in the World Cup held in South Africa, a moment he described as more special as time has passed. However, he remained silent on the USMNT's wins against Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Ecuador, or their losses to Colombia and Argentina, during the same tournament.

Fast forward to 2016, and the USMNT's participation in the Copa America Centenario ended with a 1-0 loss to Colombia. The team, coached by Jürgen Klinsmann, finished the tournament in fourth place. Despite this, Donovan expressed optimism for the future, comparing the USMNT to the elite teams in Europe and South America.

He acknowledged that soccer in the United States is not yet at the level of these top teams but suggested that the USMNT will join the world's best in due time. Donovan emphasised the need for more high-quality players, stating that the USMNT does not currently have a player of Lionel Messi's caliber.

The 34-year-old retired from professional football in 2014, but he continues to express a desire for the USMNT to improve and beat teams like Colombia and Argentina. He believes that the USMNT has been successful in beating expected opponents but needs to take the next step to beat stronger teams.

Donovan pointed out that soccer in the United States is not yet at the level of elite teams in Europe and South America. He acknowledged that the USMNT is living in a society that desires instant gratification, but emphasised that it takes time to reach the top level.

As the USMNT continues its journey towards becoming a top contender in international soccer, Donovan's words serve as a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead and the potential that the team possesses.
