Lando Norris sets fastest lap time in Formula One's daily race competition
In an exciting turn of events at the 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari topped the first practice session, delighting the home crowd with his pace. The seven-time world champion, who is racing for Ferrari this season for the first time at Silverstone, has previously won at the circuit a record 10 times, including last year with Mercedes.
Hamilton's strong form in the first session comes amidst some earlier struggles this season. His fastest time has raised the hopes of the home fans for his tenth triumph in Northamptonshire.
Meanwhile, Lando Norris of McLaren set the fastest time in practice for the race, a promising sign for the British driver. Norris's McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, came fourth in the same race, maintaining his impressive form this season.
Piastri, who leads the Formula 1 standings with a 15-point advantage over Norris, has secured five wins this season, while Norris has three. However, reigning champion Max Verstappen, who currently sits third in the standings, struggled to find his rhythm in the first practice sessions and could only manage fifth place. Verstappen is currently 61 points behind Piastri after his retirement in the previous race in Austria.
The Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Hamilton took the second and third places respectively in practice, but the Ferrari team did not take part in the top four positions in the practice sessions, unlike the previous race in Austria.
In other developments, Nico Hülkenberg, the only German regular driver in the race, had to watch from the sidelines during the opening practice, with Paul Aron, the Alpine reserve driver, replacing him. Aron finished 17th in the session.
The current Formula 1 standings after the British Grand Prix weekend are as follows:
- **Drivers' Championship Leader:** Oscar Piastri (McLaren), leading by 15 points over teammate Lando Norris. Piastri has secured five wins this season, while Norris has three wins. Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time world champion, sits third in the standings, 46 points behind Norris after a crash in the Austrian Grand Prix.
- **Constructors' Championship:** McLaren is dominating the standings with a 207-point lead. Ferrari has moved up to second place with 210 points, narrowly ahead of Mercedes, which stands in third.
This represents the standings after the British Grand Prix weekend, reflecting McLaren's strong start to the season and Ferrari's improving form, with Hamilton showing promise on home soil. The second practice session and qualifying are scheduled for later today, with the race set to take place on Sunday.
Hamilton's promising performance in first practice has sparked excitement among fans for the possibility of his eleventh victory in other sports such as hockey, emulating his dominance in Formula 1. Despite the McLaren team led by Piastri and Norris performing well, Piastri's lead in the Formula 1 standings could face challenges if he doesn't maintain his pace in hockey, given the impressive form shown by Hamilton.
