Get Ready for Lance McCullers Jr.'s Long-Awaited Comeback!
Houston Astros fans, get ready to cheer your hearts out! Lance McCullers Jr., the 31-year-old All-Star pitcher, is set to make his much-anticipated return to the major leagues this Sunday against the Chicago White Sox.
After a grueling journey, McCullers couldn't be more thrilled. "I'm absolutely pumped to hit the mound on Sunday," he shared, "This entire team, the city, and the fans should be just as excited as I am!" exclaimed the Houston native.
McCullers went under the knife on June 13, 2023, to fix his right flexor tendon and remove a pesky bone spur. He had a promising bullpen session back in June, but a setback forced him to take a break for the rest of the year. Since then, he's been working tirelessly to get back into action.
He's made four rehab starts in the minors this season, allowing only four runs, 10 hits, and walking six in a little over 12 innings, with a brilliant 16 strikeouts along the way. In his last performance, McCullers shut down Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday, racking up an impressive seven strikeouts over five shutout innings.
"My last couple of outings, I've been feeling fantastic," McCullers said, "My stuff has been sharp as a tack."
McCullers boasts a 49-32 record with a 3.48 ERA in seven seasons, all spent with the Astros. The injury that sidelined him happened back in 2021 when he pitched on short rest during the AL Division Series. After missing the first four months of the 2022 season, McCullers has been waiting patiently for his comeback.
"It'll be a real bummer if I didn't get to come back," McCullers admitted, "But almost feels like I'm making my debut in some aspects, it's been a really long road for me."
Between injuries and surgeries, McCullers has missed three entire seasons since making his major league debut in 2015. But this story isn't over yet. McCullers is determined to bounce back and show the baseball world what he's capable of.
"I've been waiting for this for an eternity," McCullers said, "It feels like I'm making my debut again in some aspects. But I'm ready for it, and I can't wait to bring my A-game back to Houston."
