Lamentations of John Dowland
The Christ Church: Five Centuries of Music 1525-2025 festival is set to celebrate 500 years of music history, and one of its highly anticipated events is the performance of Lachrimae by Phantasm. This viol consort, known for their award-winning music, will bring to life the deeply expressive pavans of tears composed by John Dowland in 1604.
Lachrimae, consisting of seven pavans and subsequent dances, is a blend of dance and lament. The composition features four descending notes, from which Dowland derived the deeply emotional pavans. After the seven pavans, the piece concludes with dances dedicated to heroes, friends, and even pirates.
