Lamentation from the European Evangelical Alliance over the conflict in Ukraine

The European Evangelical Alliance (EEA) has expressed its deep concern for the ongoing war in Ukraine, with the conflict now entering its fourth year. The war, which has resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions, has been a cause of concern for European Christians.

The war has been at the centre of high-level talks between the United States and Russia this year, with renewed but challenging dynamics since Donald Trump became U.S. president in January. Trump has pushed for a peace deal, threatening further sanctions and tariffs on Russia if President Vladimir Putin does not agree to end the war. However, Putin has rejected these overtures, maintaining a firm commitment to his war objectives.

The EEA's lament for Ukraine is being published by Evangelical Focus, with the organisation urging for sustainable peace and justice in the embattled nation. The EEA's mission is being supported by individuals across Europe and beyond, with many men, both soldiers and civilians, having given their lives to defend their land and families.

The EEA believes in justice and mercy for all parties involved in the conflict, and continues to pray for reconciliation and understanding in Ukraine. The organisation is determined to stand in the gap for the vulnerable and oppressed in Ukraine, and is fostering unity and providing a voice for 23 million evangelical Christians in Europe.

Despite Trump's calls for quick peace, no new bilateral talks have been scheduled, with uncertainty about when or if they will resume. Russia continues limited ground offensives and persistent air, missile, and drone strikes targeting Ukrainian military and civilian infrastructure, reinforcing Moscow’s strategy of war attrition. The suspension of U.S. aid has further emboldened Putin’s belief that time is on Russia’s side, weakening incentives for peace negotiations.

Ukraine, led by President Zelenskyy, has remained wary of Russia's intentions and skeptical of Trump's approach. Kyiv insists on meaningful negotiations only when Russia is serious about peace. Ukraine’s stance is strongly defensive, seeking to maintain its territorial integrity and security guarantees.

The EEA's #OneMoreYearEF campaign outlines the sustainability challenge ahead, with faith that God will make His name known in both Russia and Ukraine, symbolizing peace, love, and justice. Many families have been torn apart, with women and children sent away, and others forced to flee for their lives. The name of God has been used to justify the invasion, expansion, and oppression in Ukraine, but the EEA remains committed to promoting evangelical identity and fostering unity.

On February 24, 2022, Russia entered more Ukrainian territory unprovoked, with the EEA continuing to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The EEA's prayers for Ukraine are ongoing, with hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict that brings justice and mercy to all parties involved.
