Lamar Jackson, the star quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, has abandoned his attempt to trademark a catchphrase similar to that of broadcasting legend Troy Aikman.
In a significant resolution, Baltimore Ravens' star quarterback Lamar Jackson and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman settled their trademark dispute over the use of the number 8 in 2024. The dispute, which lasted over a year, ended when Jackson withdrew his opposition to Aikman’s trademark application for the word “EIGHT” with prejudice in August 2025.
The dispute began in July 2024 when Jackson filed to block Aikman’s trademark applications for “EIGHT” on various merchandise, arguing potential consumer confusion since Jackson had his own trademarks like “ERA 8” and “You 8 yet?”. After motions and filings by both sides, Jackson’s legal team ultimately withdrew the challenge, effectively ending the year-long battle.
The settlement permits Aikman’s company, FL101 (with Aikman as a director), to continue using the “EIGHT” trademarks on products such as apparel, bags, and beverages without further opposition from Jackson. Meanwhile, Jackson can continue using his trademarks in his business ventures, which include the number 8.
This resolution comes after another trademark battle between Jackson and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr., who secured his rights to a different No. 8 earlier this year. The exact settlement terms between Jackson and Aikman remain confidential.
Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney at Gerben Law, noted uncertainty about an agreement between Lamar Jackson and Troy Aikman regarding the use of No. 8 in trademarks. However, the withdrawal of Jackson's challenge is with prejudice, meaning he can never file the same claim again without the consent of the defendant (Troy Aikman and his company).
With this settlement, both parties can move forward with their respective business ventures, ensuring the iconic number 8 remains a significant part of both their legacies.
