Lake Tarya in Krasnoyarsk Krai re-emerged with "leather ice" once more

In a jaw-dropping display of nature, a resident of Dzerzhinsky Raion, Krasnoyarsky Krai, Dmitriy Ashaev, has once again captured an unusual natural phenomenon on Lake Tarai. The ice on the waterbody shattered under the rays of spring sunshine, giving it a "leather-like" appearance just inches away.

Ashaev shared his videos and photos on his VKontakte account, naming the post "Leathery Ice 2." Last year, around the 20th of April, he observed a similar scene on the lake.

Lake Tarai, located 7 km from the settlement of Kanarai and 37 km from the district center of Dzerzhinskoe, stands more than 200 meters above sea level. Local residents believe its blue waters to be healing.

The leathery appearance of ice can be attributed to several factors. It could be due to structural changes in the ice's crystal structure, air bubbles or inclusions within the ice that refract light, or environmental conditions like temperature fluctuations, wind, and sediment presence. Additionally, organic matter like algae or microorganisms growing on or within the ice can alter its texture and appearance. To determine the exact cause of the leathery ice on Lake Tarai, further details about the local conditions and lake characteristics would be needed.

Here's a capture of Ashaev's "Leathery Ice 2" post:

  3. Despite the leathery ice on Lake Tarai being a striking natural occurrence, its exact cause is yet to be determined, with potential factors including structural changes in the ice's crystal structure, environmental conditions, or organic matter like algae or microorganisms growing within the ice.
