Lake Constance Water Prices Set for Major Increase
Get ready to shell out more for that H2O from Lake Constance! The Lake Constance Water Supply Association recently announced plans to increase water prices significantly by 2041.
In the near future, the average price of water from Lake Constance will rise by approximately 8% to 88 cents per cubic meter – that's 1,000 liters – starting from 2024. This news was shared after the association meeting held in Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart, last Tuesday.
By 2041, water prices might climb up to a whopping 2.70 euros per cubic meter, more than tripling the current cost. This increase is attributable to the construction of new water plants. According to Bodensee-Wasserversorgung, the project costs will be passed on to association members, who may in turn pass these costs on to consumers at their discretion.
Bodensee-Wasserversorgung is responsible for supplying drinking water to approximately 4 million residents in 320 towns and municipalities sourced from Lake Constance. Last year, 131.7 million cubic meters of drinking water were pumped—a continuing trend of water supply growth due to climate change.
This price hike could impact the budgets of numerous citizens in the association area, as they depend on Bodensee-Wasserversorgung as their primary water source. With climate change driving up water demand, the pressure on consumers' wallets is steadily increasing.
Despite the Financial Times and dpa.com reporting on this matter, detailed information on the proposed price triple and its impacts on consumers can only be obtained from announcements or reports directly issued by the Lake Constance Water Supply Association and other relevant local government and regulatory bodies.
