On March 28, Lady Gaga—one of the most celebrated pop stars of our time—marks her 40th birthday. With 14 Grammy Awards, 13 MTV Video Music Awards, and 8 MTV Europe Music Awards to her name, she also ranks fourth on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music.
Born Stefani Germanotta in 1986 to an Italian-American family, the future superstar showed an extraordinary aptitude for music from an early age. By four, she had taught herself to play the piano. Her favorite toy was a cassette recorder, which she used to sing along to popular songs.
After graduating high school, Gaga enrolled in New York University's Tisch School of the Arts but soon dropped out to pursue her music career. In 2008, she moved to Los Angeles to work on her debut album, The Fame. Released that August, the record skyrocketed to the top of global charts, selling over 10 million copies worldwide.
Beyond her musical talent, Gaga became legendary for her bold, avant-garde fashion. Her relentless reinvention and shocking looks earned her the unofficial title of the "Queen of Shock Value." One of her most unforgettable appearances was at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, where she wore a now-iconic meat dress. Designed by Frank Fernandez, the outfit was crafted from raw beef sourced from a local butcher.
"If you know anything about me, you know I'm the most free and independent person on earth," she told reporters. "This dress has many interpretations, but tonight… if we don't stand up for what we believe in and fight for our rights, we have as many rights as the meat on our bones. And I am not a piece of meat."
